We’ve all heard the stereotypes about millennials: they’re flaky, lazy, entitled, tech-savvy, and want to be insta-famous. The generation following Generation X and preceding Generation Z, and giving birth to Generation Alpha, Millennials have officially overtaken the Baby Boomers as America’s largest generation, and they have grown up in a rapidly changing world. This generation is known for its usage and familiarity with the internet, mobile devices, and social media. Despite millennials’ access to technology and educational advancements, they have also endured two recessions. Millennials gain ingress into adulthood amidst historically high levels of unemployment among young people. Even in the best of times, getting your foot in the door for a job is challenging. Recently applicants describe the competition for the jobs as fierce and scarce. They find it’s hard to get a response from companies after applying, or they are one of three hundred applicants. The struggle with applying and access to jobs can lead to more hardship as companies have all the power to cut wages and improve their bottom lines.

As if that’s not enough, Millennials are on the brink of becoming a “lost generation” struggling to achieve saving milestones. How? Research shows that Millennials hold a smaller share of total household wealth than older generations at similar ages. This generation should be working and saving for their future, but their attempts are fruitless. About 1 in 4 families have negative net worth, meaning their debts outsize their assets. And roughly 1 in 6 say they would be completely unable to pay for a $400 emergency expense (i.e., not with cash, credit cards, borrowing, or selling assets). For those experiencing job loss, these emergencies can prove catastrophic without sufficient financial cushion (


All stereotypes aside, this generation has blossomed through hardship. They have never lived in a golden age or time of prosperity. This generation’s formative years have endured a major terrorist attack, two recessions, expensive wars, inequality, climate emergencies, and a global pandemic. While generational wars wage on social media about who had it worse, one thing is sure, Millennials have been through the wringer.

To break it down: Millennials were raised to be successful, achieve, accomplish, and see themselves as above average. For all of the preparation in their upbringing and living in an era of heightened expectations, Millennials experience unprecedented levels of anxiety and depression. The rules of modern resumes can be tricky. Has your resume stood the test of time? If you haven’t updated your resume in the past few years, I can guarantee it hasn’t.

I get so many client calls cautioning me that they haven’t updated their resumes for at least ten years! Formatting has changed, applicant tracking software has changed, our world has changed. Long gone are the days of hitting the pavement with your paper resume in hand. Almost every job recruiter posts their open positions on a job website and filters resumes through the website’s tracking tools. Rules For Modern Resumes: Length

Your resume is not measured by its length but by its depth. Many applicants want to jam their resumes full of fluff and unnecessary information. The problem with that is, you have a very limited window to make an impression. If recruiters are wading through fluff and redundancies, they will not give your resume any attention; it will go straight to the recycling bin. The solution to the size issue is simple, keep your resume length between one and two pages. If you’ve got enough experience, absolutely expand it onto that second page.

Rules For Modern Resumes: Formatting

Modern resumes are concise and must withstand the applicant tracking system. Funky formatting with tables, off-beat expressions, or excessive bullet points will not survive. To optimize your modern resume, remember K.I.S.S. Keep It Super Simple.

Start by trimming the fat and removing your references. If recruiters require references, they will request them. Next, remove your objective statement. Recruiters are not interested in what you want. They want to know why they should hire you, what they get out of it. Instead of an objective statement, include a career summary or headline section. Career summaries are akin to an elevator pitch and encourage recruiters to keep reading about you.

Remember our earlier conversation about length? Well, that also applies to the experience section. It’s not necessary to go back 30 years to the jobs you had in high school. Keep your experience section relevant and limit it to the past 15 years if applicable. Keep the information consistent with the job for which you’re applying.  

Wrap up your resume with an education and certifications section. And, please do not include your GPA. Recruiters don’t care about your GPA. They do care about honors you received, relevant clubs, and awards.

Keywords are essential for your modern resume. For example, recruiters search through their submitted resumes for specific keywords or phrases to find their ideal candidate. Optimize your resume to include keywords or phrases to avoid the recycling bin.

Include keywords with strategy, don’t just stuff them in there. Research the job you’re interested in and include keywords that matter. Include them organically in your experience. You can also include a skills section in your headline.

Ah, the dreaded ATS! What is it and why is it important? We get these questions all the time! Applicant tracking systems help modern hiring teams streamline their hiring process. How does this affect how you apply for jobs? Employers can receive hundreds of resumes in the process of filling an open position. These systems are used to filter out unqualified candidates. It all boils down to this, companies do save time, energy, and financial resources- but the perfect candidate can slip through the cracks. So, what’s the solution?

How do applicant tracking systems work?

ATS systems use algorithms and your application doesn’t end up in front of a human being until you bypass them. Stay with me here, algorithms aren’t scary!

Algorithms are just requirements. These requirements can include required skills, keywords, and job history. Recruiters typically begin wading through the sea of resumes by searching for key skills and titles. If they hire an administrative assistant, they will most likely start by exploring their reports for the keywords “administrative and assistant.” If an applicant does not have those keywords listed on their resume, they will not be selected for that open position.

Bummer, right? Not if you understand how the system works! The software continues paring down the report pulling all candidates whose resume fits the required description. American pioneer of information technology, Ted Nelson said, “The good news about computers is that they do what you tell them to do. The bad news is that they do what you tell them to do.”

  • Review the job opening and tailor your resume to fit the requirements.
  • Don’t use special formatting- avoid including excel tables or excessive bullet points.
  • Use traditional fonts like Times New Roman and Calibri.
  • Use standard headings like “Professional Experience” and “Education, Certifications.”

Here’s the bottom line- you can get into the hands of a human and not cheat the system! Don’t copy and paste all of the job posting’s keywords. It will not increase your chances of being selected by “stuffing” your resume with buzzwords or copying lines from the job post into your resume.
